Digging into a Tsunami Disaster
The tsunami disaster that struck the Indian Ocean in 2004 changed millions of lives but it also changed the Earth itself. The worst and most powerful earthquake in forty years originated just off the coast of Indonesia where the India and Burma plates meet.
UNICEF was created in the aftermath of World War II to provide humanitarian assistance to children affected by war. They also help after natural disasters, like the 26 December 2004 tsunami.
Tohoku-oki tsunami of 11 March 2011 - One Year On
By the first anniversary of the Great Tohoku earthquake, the full impact of the disaster is realized. Nearly 16,000 people died and another 3,000 are missing and presumed dead. Early warning systems and evacuation made the Japan tsunami much less devastating that the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.
According to Prime Minister Naoto Kan, Japan is facing its worst crisis since World War II. After an earthquake with an 8.8 magnitude created a deadly tsunami it is said that over 10,000 people have died and there have been explosions in nuclear power plants.
